For high-volume runs on general machine parts, 1018 delivers consistent machinability run after run. It’s not a high-strength grade, but for fabrication work and moderate-duty components, it handles the job without overcomplicating your process.

1045: Medium Carbon, Built for Load-Bearing Parts

1045 carries more carbon than 1018, and that directly raises its strength and wear resistance. It’s the most common shafting steel in our carbon round bar line because it handles torsional loads, resists wear at journal surfaces, and responds correctly to induction hardening.

If your part rotates, carries a bearing, or faces cyclical stress in service, 1045 is the grade to spec. Machinability is still solid on a production CNC. The slightly higher demand on tooling is a fair trade for what the material delivers under load.

Is 1018 or 1045 easier to machine?

1018 is more forgiving on tooling due to its low carbon content and ductility. Both grades run well on a production CNC.

Can 1045 be induction hardened but not 1018?

Correct. 1045 responds to induction hardening because of its medium carbon content. 1018’s low carbon content does not support that process.

What tolerances do you hold on precision ground carbon bar?
