Hastelloy C22 and Other Nickel Alloys: What to Consider Before Ordering

Nickel alloy round bar stock with industrial processing equipment and precision machined

When a part has to live in a corrosive environment, the material list gets short and specific. If nickel alloys are on that list, that’s where the names start to blur together. Hastelloy C22, Hastelloy C276, Monel, Inconel. They sound like cousins, and in a sense they are, but they aren’t built from the same recipe.

At O’Hare Precision Metals, we’ve supplied round bar from the Chicago area since 1970, and nickel and high temperature alloys are one of our product families. If C22 is already under consideration, understanding the available alloy options and the requirements of your application can help you prepare a more accurate material request.

Matching a Nickel Alloy to Corrosive Service

For corrosive service, start with the required alloy designation and the conditions the finished part will encounter. Hastelloy C22, C276, Monel, and other nickel alloy options have different material characteristics and applications, so it’s important to confirm your requirements before ordering.

What our nickel bar stock covers

Our nickel alloy bar stock serves applications where strength, corrosion resistance, and high temperature performance matter. These include aerospace (engine components and landing gear); chemical processing (reactors, heat exchangers, and piping); and oil and gas (valves and pump shafts).

That range is useful context. A chemical processing buyer sourcing bar for a heat exchanger and an oil and gas buyer sourcing pump shafts are both shopping in the same family, but they may not land on the same alloy.

Where Hastelloy C22 fits

Hastelloy C22 is one of the corrosion resistant nickel alloys we supply. If your material specification calls for C22, keeping that exact designation on the purchase order is important when requesting bar stock.

How C22 compares with the other Hastelloy options

Hastelloy C22 isn’t the only Hastelloy product we offer. Our C276 round bar is a nickel molybdenum chromium alloy, while our general Hastelloy bar is a nickel molybdenum alloy known for chemical resistance. Each is a different alloy, so confirm the exact designation your application requires.

Corrosion performance needs to be evaluated against the chemicals, temperatures, and other service conditions involved. Even a small difference in an alloy designation on a nickel alloy order is worth catching before the bar is cut.

Monel, Inconel, and the rest of the nickel family

Outside the Hastelloy group, Monel is a nickel copper alloy used in marine and chemical industry applications. If your corrosive environment involves either of those, Monel may also be worth discussing with your engineer.

Inconel is a nickel chromium superalloy associated with extreme heat resistance. A286 is an iron nickel chromium alloy used for high temperature fasteners and jet engine parts. Our broader material range also includes Nitronic 60, an austenitic stainless steel associated with wear and galling resistance, and Custom 450, a high strength precipitation hardening stainless steel. Both are stainless grades, not nickel alloys.

Plan for welding before you order

If the part will be welded, factor that in early. Our nickel bar stock can be welded with TIG, MIG, or submerged arc methods, and heat input control is required. Confirm the right method for your alloy and joint. If welding is part of your manufacturing process, include that information with your material specifications when requesting a quote.

O’Hare Precision Metals’ bar chamfering capabilities include welding preparation, with CNC and manual chamfering available.

Getting the bar to size

Centerless grinding is the core of what we do. Depending on the material and application, our centerless grinding capabilities include tolerances up to 0.0001 inch and surface finishes of 8 microinches or better. Our turning service works with customer specified metals and alloys to reduce a workpiece to its specified diameter. We’re ISO 9001:2015 certified, and quality control inspection happens at each phase of our operation.

What to put on a nickel alloy quote

Our request a quote form asks for your name, email, phone, company, referral source, and quote information. In the quote field, write the alloy exactly as your spec shows it, C22 or otherwise, then add diameter, length, tolerance, surface finish, quantity, and any cutting, chamfering, or welding plans. If you’re still comparing alloys, describe the service environment the part will see.

Let’s narrow down your alloy

If C22 or another nickel alloy is on your next print, send it our way. Use our request a quote form, call (847) 640-6050, or email sales@ohareprecision.com.

FAQs

What is Hastelloy C22?

Hastelloy C22 is a corrosion resistant nickel alloy, and it’s one of several Hastelloy options we supply.

How is Hastelloy C22 different from C276?

Hastelloy C276 is a nickel molybdenum chromium alloy, while C22 is a corrosion resistant nickel alloy. Which one fits depends on your service conditions, so confirm the required alloy before ordering.

Can nickel alloy bar be welded?

Nickel alloy bar stock can be welded with TIG, MIG, or submerged arc methods, with heat input control required. The appropriate procedure depends on the specific alloy. Our bar chamfering service also includes welding preparation.
