How Titanium Bar Stock Is Used in Aerospace and Medical Manufacturing Applications

Titanium earns its place in demanding supply chains because no other metal combines a high strength-to-weight ratio, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance in saltwater, and extreme temperature resistance in one material. Engineers and procurement managers across aerospace and medical manufacturing rely on it for exactly that reason.

At O’Hare Precision Metals, we’ve supplied titanium bar stock from our Arlington Heights, IL, facility since 1970. Grade selection matters as much as the material itself, so this guide covers what you need to know before placing an order.

What Makes Titanium the Right Choice for Aerospace and Medical Applications

Aerospace structures demand materials that survive heavy load cycles without adding unnecessary mass. Titanium’s high strength-to-weight ratio solves that problem directly. Medical manufacturers choose it because it’s biocompatible, meaning the human body tolerates it, making it suitable for implants, prosthetics, and surgical devices.

One honest note: titanium is challenging to machine due to its high strength and low thermal conductivity. Heat builds at the cutting zone quickly, so specialized tools and careful process control are required. We handle that on-site before your bar stock ships.

Aerospace Grades and Their Applications

Grade 5, Ti 6Al-4V, is the most commercially available titanium grade and the practical starting point for most aerospace sourcing conversations. Ti 6Al-6V-2Sn handles turbine compressor and aerospace work through its creep resistance. Ti 8-1-1 carries the lowest density of any grade we stock, making it the right pick for jet engine and airframe parts where mass is the primary constraint.

Ti 6-2-4-2 and Ti 6-2-4-6 cover jet engine parts and airframe components. Ti 10V-2Fe-3Al is heat treatable and used in compressor blades and airframe structures. Ti 15V-3Cr-3Sb-3Al is cold-formable, which suits airframe components, hydraulic tubing, and fasteners where forming is part of the process.

Medical Grades and Implant Applications

Grade 23, Ti 6Al-4V ELI, is specified where better fracture toughness is required, covering orthopedic implants and aerospace structural components alike. CP Grade 1 offers the highest ductility and is used in medical, desalination, and marine applications. CP Grade 4 steps up in strength with lower ductility, serving medical, aerospace, marine, and industrial needs.

Grade 9, Ti 3Al-2.5V, sits in the medium strength range and is used in automotive, aerospace, and medical applications. CP Grades 2 and 3 fall between those extremes, with Grade 2 covering chemical processing and aerospace, and Grade 3 suited to industrial and aerospace demand.

Industrial and Corrosion-Focused Grades

Not every titanium application is airframe or implant work. Grade 7 serves power generation, desalination, and chemical processing environments. Grade 11 is highly corrosion-resistant and used in industrial and desalination settings. Grade 12 offers enhanced corrosion resistance for power generation applications.

Grade 19, Ti Beta C, serves marine, aerospace, and medical applications where high strength leads the specification. Grade 6, Ti 5Al-2.5Sn, is selected for weldability in aerospace fabrication, where the weld zone behavior matters as much as the base metal.

Sizes, Processing, and Quality Standards

Our titanium bar stock runs from 0.187 inches to 10.000 inches in diameter, available in 10 ft and 20 ft lengths. On-site processing includes centerless grinding to tolerances up to .0001 inches with a surface finish of 8 micro inches or better, CNC saw cutting up to 7 inches in diameter, turning, polishing, and CNC milling.

Quality control inspections run at each phase of operation. We are ISO 9001:2015 certified, and that documentation matters when your application sits inside a regulated aerospace or medical supply chain.
